From Desk Job to Life-Changing Fitness

During my twenties and early thirties, I was very fit. But once a desk job and self-employment took over, exercise disappeared from my life. Long working hours, poor eating habits, and too much alcohol soon became the norm.

In early 2018, I told my wife that I wanted to be fit for my 50th birthday the following January. Unfortunately, motivation alone wasn’t enough.

By summer 2018—after months of saying I was “too busy to exercise”—my wife booked me in for an NHS health MOT. The results were a shock.


The Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything

The test showed:

  • High systolic blood pressure (166 – well above the ideal 120)

  • High cholesterol

  • Borderline Type 2 diabetes

  • BMI over 30 (clinically obese)

  • Weight: 90.4kg (over 14 stone at 5ft 8)

  • Heart age 10 years older than my actual age

  • Twice the national average risk of cardiovascular disease

I was prescribed blood-pressure medication and told I’d need to inform insurance companies. It felt like a life sentence—and it hit hard.

But instead of accepting it, I researched how diet and exercise could reverse many of these conditions. That’s when I decided things had to change.


Taking Control Through Fitness

I dusted off an old cross-trainer that had been acting as a coat stand and started with just a few minutes a day. Slowly, my stamina improved. I added variety, worked more muscle groups, and before long I was completing 10km sessions.

As my fitness improved:

  • Blood pressure dropped back into the normal range

  • Stress levels reduced

  • Focus and productivity increased

  • Overall health and wellbeing improved significantly


Discovering Military Bootcamp Training

My wife had been attending military bootcamp sessions for a couple of years and encouraged me to join. Initially, I felt too unfit, so I continued training at home and worked with a personal trainer once a week.

I also made big changes to my diet—cutting alcohol, checking food labels, and staying in a calorie deficit.

Within three months, I lost three stone, regained control of my blood pressure, and felt confident enough to try a military bootcamp.

The first session was free, so I thought, why not?
I loved it.


Progression, Support & Community

I quickly realised I was fitter than I thought. I progressed from Blue bib to Red, and by April 2019, I reached Green bib level.

The support from the instructors and the group environment was incredible—something I’d never experienced training alone in a gym.

That journey inspired me to help others who felt:

  • Too busy

  • Too unfit

  • Too intimidated to start


Becoming a Military Fitness Instructor

I set a goal to become a bootcamp instructor within one year.

I completed my Fitness Instructor qualification, became a Box Fit instructor, and spent weeks learning alongside experienced instructors. After passing my assessment, I achieved that goal.

Now, I get to help others transform their health—no matter their age or starting point.


Military Fitness for All Levels

Military fitness is one of the most effective and motivating ways to get fit, but it’s not just for ex-military. Most PMF members have no military background at all.

Our outdoor group sessions offer:

  • Scalable workouts for beginners to advanced

  • Motivation and accountability

  • A strong sense of community

  • Training outdoors in all weather

It creates a buzz you just don’t get in a gym.
