EMERGENCY ACTION (ALWAYS FIRST)

DR ABC

D – Danger

  • Make area safe (traffic, equipment, weather, terrain).

R – Response

  • “Are you okay?”

  • Gently shake shoulders.

A – Airway

  • Head tilt, chin lift.

B – Breathing

  • Check for normal breathing (max 10 seconds).

C – CPR

  • Not breathing normally?
    ➡️ Call 999 / 112 immediately
    ➡️ Start CPR.

Outdoor Notes

  • Move group away from hazards.

  • Send someone to guide ambulance from nearest access point.

  • Use what3words / GPS pin.

Signs

  • Unresponsive

  • Not breathing normally / gasping

Action

  1. Call 999 / 112.

  2. Start compressions:

    • 100–120 per minute

    • 5–6cm depth

  3. 30 compressions : 2 breaths (if trained)

  4. Use AED ASAP.

Continue until:

  • Help arrives

  • Casualty recovers

  • You are relieved

Outdoor Notes

  • Use mat/coat under back on soft ground.

  • Protect from cold while continuing CPR.

  • Send guide to access road.

Mild (Coughing)

  • Encourage coughing.

  • Monitor.

Severe (Cannot speak/breathe)

  1. 5 back blows

  2. 5 abdominal thrusts

  3. Repeat

If unconscious → CPR + 999.

  • Ensure stable footing on uneven ground.

  • Move away from slopes or water edges.

Action

  • Apply firm direct pressure.

  • Elevate limb if possible.

  • Apply bandage.

  • Add dressings if soaking (do NOT remove first).

➡️ Call 999 if bleeding uncontrolled.

Outdoor Notes

  • Use clean clothing if no sterile dressing.

  • Insulate casualty from cold ground.

  • Assign someone to meet ambulance.

Monitor For

  • Confusion

  • Vomiting

  • Severe headache

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Seizure

➡️ Call 999 if any red flag present.

No return to training that day.

Action

  • Support in position found.

  • Do NOT move.

  • Support head in neutral position.

Minor

  • Cool under running water 20 minutes.

  • Cover loosely.

Severe

  • Do NOT apply creams.

  • Do NOT burst blisters.

  • Avoid hypothermia in cold conditions.

  • Ensure power source is OFF.

  • Do NOT touch until safe.

  • Call 999.

  • Check breathing → CPR if needed.

  • Cool rapidly (wet skin + fan).

  • Cold packs to neck/armpits/groin.

  • Sit upright.

  • 1 puff reliever inhaler every 30–60 sec.

  • Up to 10 puffs.

➡️ No improvement after 10 puffs = 999.

If conscious:

  • Sugary drink / glucose.

  • Then slow-release snack.

If unconscious:

  • Recovery position.

  • Call 999.

Use if unconscious but breathing.

  1. Arm at right angle.

  2. Far hand to cheek.

  3. Bend far knee.

  4. Roll toward you.

  5. Tilt head back.

Monitor breathing continuously.
